Wausau School District reading specialist Amy McGovern has been named ‘Illuminator of the Year - Educator’ for her notable contributions in the District. The honor, bestowed by leading
K-12 student achievement solution Illuminate Education, is awarded to a select group of educators and administrators committed to increasing the power of teaching and the delight of learning.

McGovern has been recognized for her outstanding skill and leadership around utilizing data to support students and teachers. In her role, she helps teachers implement the District’s PK-12 literacy curriculum, provides coaching and professional learning, and actively supports professional learning communities (PLCs). Her work enables teachers across the District to meaningfully assess their students’ knowledge and needs, provide timely interventions, and monitor student growth. Her infectious passion and deep knowledge make data actionable for teachers and administrators alike.

McGovern was one of only two 2020 Illuminators of the Year and the only awardee to receive the Educator Award. Both honorees were recognized at the Illuminate Education User Conference (IEUC) in Anaheim, California, on January 31, 2020. The event brings together over 800 educators for two days of comprehensive professional development, sessions, and networking.

“The Illuminator of the Year program gives us the opportunity to recognize amazing educators and administrators who are accelerating the teaching and learning process for all students,” said Christine Willig, CEO of Illuminate Education. “It brings us great pleasure to honor Amy McGovern at this year’s Illuminate Education User Conference for her tireless efforts in supporting teachers and students at Wausau School District.”

McGovern has been instrumental in the District’s usage of Illuminate eduCLIMBER and Illuminate FastBridge. Her deep proficiency in assessment and data analysis practices has helped the District unlock the power of data to increase student outcomes.

“It’s truly an extra special honor to be nominated by my colleagues for this award,” said McGovern. “I was so surprised to hear my name called out at the conference! To be recognized for my contribution to our collective effort around supporting the teachers and students of Wausau School District feels both remarkable and humbling. All teachers who put their hearts into this work deserve this recognition. I love helping teachers help their students. I appreciate how PLC time spent with teachers reviewing eduCLIMBER and FastBridge has fostered thoughtful reflection on the whole child.”
