Board of Education Approves Operational Referendum Question for April 1 Ballot

If the April 1 referendum is approved, it would have an estimated property tax impact of $0 per year on every $1,000 of equalized property value in our community.  This is possible due to sound planning by district leaders and the Board of Education.  The district has worked to pre-pay debt to help keep the tax rate stable over the long term and minimize the tax impact of a referendum.  Taking these measures has provided room for the board to propose an operational referendum without an associated property tax increase.

As a reminder, the Elementary Facility Plan Citizen Task Force, made up of parents, staff, and community members, met 10 times over the course of the last several months as part of the Wausau School District/Board’s process to create a long-range elementary school facilities plan.  The focus of the plan was whether the number of elementary schools in the Wausau School District should be reduced and if so, then how, where, and when.  The task force was facilitated by Mark Roffers and Nick Johnson from MDRoffers Consulting, LLC – a school facility planning and projections firm.

Elementary Facility Plan Citizen Task Force Meeting on December 18, 2024

As a reminder, this meeting was added because some new/refined information became available related to school capacities and AGR, or Achievement Gap Reduction, Funding.  We wanted the task force to have that information as well, so that together, they could determine whether or not that new/refined information influenced their recommendations.

Cale Bushman

“As a school Board, we have had the unique opportunity to watch and evaluate for the past several months a person in action. On behalf of the Wausau School District School Board, it is my privilege to identify Mr. Cale Bushman as our next Superintendent of Schools for the Wausau School District. Cale has demonstrated exceptional leadership as Interim Superintendent of the Wausau School District over the last 6 months,” said Wausau School Board President James Bouché. “We know that he will continue to do incredible work; guiding and positioning the Wausau School District for success.”

Ms. Amanda White receives "Teacher of the Month" award from HOT 97.7 an d Schierl Tire.

Ms. Amanda White was nominated by a parent in her special education classroom.  She said, "My child has never once had a teacher that made him feel like he matters, that he’s seen, cared about, valued & worth fighting for….until we transferred schools and Mrs. White became his teacher. Now he looks forward to going to school, to learning & making new friends, all because he has a teacher that finally makes him feel valued."

As a reminder, some new information has come to light specifically around AGR (Achievement Gap Reduction) funding.  Additionally, we have updated information regarding the capacities at our elementary schools and we would like to ensure that there is sufficient space for special education, classrooms, encore classes, bridge rooms, etc. by conducting a real-time mapping of each of the buildings.  We'd like the task force to have that information as well, so that together they can determine if the new information influences their recommendations.
