Consolidation Board Meeting Updates

Work is currently underway to implement the following consolidation plan after the conclusion of the 2024-2025 school year:

  • Hewitt-Texas Elementary closes and shifts to Riverview Elementary
  • Hawthorn Hills Elementary closes and shifts to John Marshall and Franklin Elementaries (Hawthorn Hills’ 4K Academy shifts to Lincoln)
  • Grant Elementary closes and shifts to Thomas Jefferson Elementary (Thomas Jefferson’s 4K Academy shifts to Lincoln Elementary)
  • Lincoln Elementary closes and is repurposed into a 4K Academy.  Grades K-5 at Lincoln will shift to G.D. Jones Elementary.  (Jones’ 4K Academy shifts to Lincoln)

We know change can sometimes be hard, but as one of our Board members mentioned, it’s not the brick-and-mortar buildings we’re attached to, it’s the amazing people in them that make our schools so special; creating life-long memories.  Next school year, our buildings will still be full of those amazing people with far more life-long memories to come!  Please know, we’ll do this together.  In the meantime, please keep an eye out for more information and updates here on this page as details become available.

About the Elementary Facility Plan Citizen Task Force

Members of the Elementary Task Force gather in small groups to review scenarios and discuss.
  • 15 Wausau School District Parents
  • 15 Wausau School District Employees
  • 15 Community Members without Children Currently in the district

The Elementary Facility Plan Citizen Task Force, met 10 times over the course of the last several months as part of the Wausau School District/Board’s process to create a long-range elementary school facilities plan.  The focus of the plan was whether the number of elementary schools in the Wausau School District should be reduced and if so, then how, where, and when.  The task force was facilitated by Mark Roffers and Nick Johnson from MDRoffers Consulting, LLC – a school facility planning and projections firm.

UPDATE:  Monday, June 23, 2025

We want to take a moment to provide you with an update, now that the school year is over, around consolidation within the Wausau School District.  Our staff members at Hawthorn Hills, Hewitt-Texas, Grant, and Lincoln have worked incredibly hard to pack up their spaces in preparation for the moving process.  Those staff members, including our custodians and the Maintenance and Operations team, have done an outstanding job packing and preparing for their moves. The moving process is now getting started and will likely be ongoing for a majority of summer break.

In addition, Hawthorn Hills, Hewitt-Texas, and Grant elementary schools have officially been listed and are now up for sale.  The district is working with Tim Wimmer - a local broker on the sale of the listed properties.  The school board will be making the final decision on all sales of the prospective schools.

As we move forward with consolidation of our schools, we want to express our deepest gratitude for your continued flexibility, patience, and understanding during this time of change.  We recognize that these transitions impact not just buildings, but the communities and memories built within them. Your support and resilience have been invaluable as we work together to ensure a smooth transition for our students and staff. Our shared goal remains providing every child with the highest quality educational experience in a setting that supports their growth, well-being, and future success.

Thank you for your partnership and for standing with us as we take these important steps toward strengthening our district for generations to come.

Community Celebrations

COMING SOON:  Video highlighting Hawthorn Hills' Last Hoorah!

Honoring Hewitt-Texas Elementary

Thank you to everyone who came out to give Hewitt-Texas the send-off it deserved. While the building may close its doors, the spirit, memories, and friendships forged within its walls will live on forever. ❤️

What an incredibly bittersweet day at Hewitt-Texas Elementary's Final Buzz Bash! 🐝

It was truly heartwarming to see hundreds of familiar faces, past and present, come together one last time on Friday, May 30, 2025, to honor a place that has held so many cherished memories for generations. The love and sense of community filling the air were palpable, a testament to the profound impact Hewitt-Texas has had on so many lives. And as if the day wasn't special enough, we had the most incredible surprise! After searching, a former student knew exactly where our time capsule was buried! Unearthing it was an emotional moment, a tangible link to the past.

As the 2024–2025 school year comes to a close, we honor the legacy of Lincoln Elementary—a place that has shaped generations of learners, leaders, and lifelong memories. 💙

On April 17th, the Lincoln community came together one final time to walk the halls and share stories that span decades. It was a powerful moment of connection and remembrance, filled with gratitude and love.

Though the doors of Lincoln Elementary will close, its spirit will carry forward as the building is repurposed into our new 4K Academy—a place of beginnings.

Honoring Lincoln Elementary

Thank you to everyone who made Lincoln a home for so many years. Here's to honoring the past while building the future. 🌱

Honoring Grant Elementary

Thank you, Grant Elementary, for 100+ years of love, learning, and legacy. You will live on in every life you’ve touched.

On Thursday, May 8, 2025, more than 600 hearts came together to say goodbye to a place that shaped generations — Grant Elementary School. As the final school bell draws near, we gathered not just to remember the building, but to celebrate the stories, the laughter, and the lifelong bonds formed within its walls.

Among us was a 104-year-old former student — one of Grant's oldest living alumni — who returned to walk its halls once more. From first steps into kindergarten to final steps out into the world, Grant has been a home for so many.

This wasn’t just a farewell. It was a tribute. A living, breathing reminder that schools are more than bricks and mortar — they’re memories, milestones, and moments that never leave us.
