About Act 20
Wisconsin Act 20 requires all schools in the state, including charter schools, to provide literacy screening measures and support to ensure student literacy success. The law is written specifically for 4K-3rd grade students, but does impact students in 4th and 5th grade as well -- if they would need to receive continued support to ensure growth on unfinished skills toward proficiency.
What you should know about Act 20
- Our teachers will continue to provide high-quality science-based early literacy instruction utilizing Really Great Reading and Wit & Wisdom curriculums.
- To make sure students get the support they need, universal screeners will be given using aimswebPlus in the Fall, Winter, and Spring of each year.
- If you child scores below the 26th percentile on the screener, they will need to take additional assessments. Data from the screener and assessments, along with other information, will be used to create a Personal Support Plan (PSP). Personal Support Plans may be just large group, or small group, classroom instruction. Please know your child's teacher will support your child.
- What's in a Personal Support Plan? Areas of need, goals and benchmarks, progress monitoring, and support strategies for parents/caregivers are all included. It's just formal documentation of support that is required under the law.
- If your child currently has an Individualized Education Plan (IEP), your student's PSP may reflect the support outlined in the IEP, or may be embedded within the IEP. Please talk with your child's case manager if you have questions about how the IEP and PSP may work together to support your child's learning.
- Watch for information from your child's school on their universal screening results. If a Personal Support Plan is needed, that plan will be sent home for your required signature. If you have questions, please reach out to your child's teacher.
